Company’s Efforts to Reduce Emissions Improve Environment and Bottom Line
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Oct. 30, 2006 — Schneider National, Inc., a premier provider of transportation, logistics and intermodal services, announced today that the company has received an Environmental Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWaySM Transport Partnership for its achievements and leadership in reducing emissions of air pollutants and greenhouse gases from its freight transport activities. The awards were announced at the 2006 American Trucking Associations Management Conference, held Oct. 28 to 31, in Dallas. Schneider was one of 24 companies, from among the Partnership’s more than 400 partners, to receive this distinction. “Our partnership with SmartWay Transport proves that, regardless of size, companies can save money while they help the environment. We urge everyone in the freight industry to join this worthwhile effort,” said Chris Lofgren, president and CEO of Schneider National, Inc. SmartWay Transport Partners include businesses and organizations of all sizes, from FORTUNE 500® companies to family owned businesses, each working to improve their environmental performance. Schneider drivers are trained to achieve greater fuel efficiency and all of the company’s units have complete aerodynamic packages which include bumpers, side fairings, fuel tank skirts, integrated roof shields and minimum tractor-to-trailer gap. Schneider’s tractors are road-speed limited to 65 mph with a maximum cruise speed of 63 mph. “The EPA is pleased to recognize partners with SmartWay Excellence Awards. The award winners are leading the way toward a cleaner, more efficient transportation future with strategies that reduce emissions and increase profits,” said Margo Oge, director, EPA Office of Transportation and Air Quality. In 2004 the EPA and a select group of 15 shipping and business leaders, which included Schneider National, introduced SmartWay as an innovative, market-based partnership to reduce fuel use, greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants from the freight sector. In just two years, by employing straightforward strategies for reducing truck and rail emissions, partner companies have essentially reduced emissions equivalent to that of 500,000 cars. Despite record-breaking diesel prices, more than 400 freight industry companies are on track to save more than $1.2 billion on fuel and remove more than four million tons of carbon dioxide emissions from the air by 2007 as part of the EPA’s innovative SmartWaySM Transport Partnership.
